summer adventures

The other day, after a perfect evening of short films and dinner with friends, we stumbled upon some sidewalk salsa.  A local salsa club was holding a dance party in the middle of the street just as the night set in.  And, of course, the only thing to do in that situation is... well, dance!  It is time to spend the warm days (and nights) savouring the outdoors and seeking new adventures.  Let the summer linger for a little longer by finding some spontaneity in each day. Whether it's enjoying a bike ride (or a Vespa ride), late lunches on a garden patio, picnics by the water or simply a book with a blanket on the grass.  Let these summer days be full of cherished moments.  And always make time to dance in the streets.

jolie

photography project

I recently had the honour of shooting Comrags Spring 2011 collection for a very lovely online magazine Heron of Style.  A day sprinkled with old Hollywood glamour in the historic Gladstone Hotel.  We had an amazing time!  I wanted to give you a sneak peek of some of the photos but there will be more coming very soon.

dace ~ très fantastique!

With some warmer weather flowing through the city, I can't help but think of the season that lies right around the corner.  When I came across this beautiful video for dace's Spring 2010 collection I could practically smell the fresh air of spring.  The flowers blooming, gorgeous french chic fashion and perfect moments in the spring sunshine!
I am spending some time in Paris this April and I hope to enjoy some bike rides through the Boulevard Saint-Germain, lots of pastry breakfasts and some 'dace' style.  The Canadian designer behind the line, Dace Moore, began making her very first garments using vintage patterns that she would find in thrift shops and it shows.  She has a very sweet, effortless quality to her pieces that make them classic and perfectly timeless ~ enjoy!

Cannot Get Enough of...

Florence and the Machine

Not only is she absolutely gorgeous but her intense drumbeats, melodic songs and killer fashion have me in a trance!  Oh Florence, I love you so!   Her lyrics are simply mesmerizing!  Cannot stop listening to Dog Days Are Over (its on right now), Drumming, Hurricane Drunk.....well actually the entire album.  Lungs is an outstanding debut album and I will most certainly be anticipating what will be next.

Her style and stage clothes are the icing on the cake.  The voice is so powerful that Lungs is the obvious choice for an album title but if you listen to the lyrics of Between Two Lungs it has a very eerie, unexpected disposition. Must see her live! The music videos are also a treat.  Visual deliciousness!  Dog Days has a fantastic video and Rabbit Heart is simply magic!  Enjoy...

Still enjoying the crisp air and warm sun of this transformational season.  This is the most wonderful season for fashion and all of the layering possibilities.  Love, love, love these beautiful photos from Glamour UK and the classic use of a good wide-leg jean!!!  I'll take one of everything ~ especially the gorgeous D&G blue ruffled blouse. xoxo

Grey & Gold at Valentino

The RTW Valentino collection at last weeks Paris show was nothing short of magnificent.  Every piece was another treat for the eye.  The light colour palette with black lace and leather touches, the rosettes, chiffon, swirls of tulle and silk sashes .... ahhhhh.  It was impossible to pick only a few photos for this post!  The make-up and hair was elegant as well as a little edgy.  The shoes were extraordinary! Designed by the incredible Phillip Treacy these striking pieces were truly the show-stopper.  With delicate, lace wings cascading up the leg it was like black icing on an already delicious cake!

Avedon's Muse

Dovima
"She was the last of the great elegant, aristocratic beauties...the most remarkable and unconventional beauty of her time." ~Avedon

In their most famous piece together "Dovima with Elephants." (Paris, 1955)  Here, Dovima is wearing the first Christian Dior gown designed by his then, new assistant Yves Saint-Laurent.  Timeless.

Dovima has said of her relationship with Avedon that they were so connected on an artistic level that she would know exactly what look/pose he wanted before he'd even ask.

Ms. Dovima in Balenciaga.

Richard Avedon truly changed fashion photography and portraiture forever.  He encouraged models to be expressive and create emotions, rather than maintain traditional static poses, bringing the clothes to life. He knew how to capture the true essence of his subjects.

Dovima had a supporting role as Marion in Funny Face with Fred Astaire and Audrey Hepburn (another Avedon muse) which was loosely based on Avedon's early career.

Classic Elegance.

Coco Avant Chanel

It's no surprise that I love, love, love film. I believe it is such a powerful medium that transcends time and erases all borders. I look forward to those days off when I just curl up on the sofa and watch movies all day long. I am really excited about this film, Coco Before Chanel! Audrey Tautou as Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel will be perfectly enchanting and bring a new life to the powerful woman we've always adored.

Vintage Paris

On hazy days like today I wish I was roaming the streets of Paris. Perhaps in an over sized hat and perfectly fitted pencil skirt like these vintage ladies.
These exquisite photos are by Walde Huth. A female fashion photographer from the 50's. Take a visit over to My Vintage Vogue for the most amazing collection of classic fashion photography.

Karl Lagerfeld ~ The Mastermind

Conducting his orchestra of fashion and music on the beaches of Venice. Karl Lagerfeld held the Cruise 2010 show in this lovely Italian city because it is where Coco Chanel went in 1920 to soak up inspiration. This video touched me deeply and leaves me with goosebumps every time...
