To New Beginnings

Stumbling across many inspiring ideas for my new apartment.  Tomorrow is moving day and excitement is beginning to emerge above the stress.  With boxes piled sky high I am finding my escape in some of these perfectly designed spaces.
Starting fresh is always wonderful.  There is something so sweet about beginning to settle into a new place ~ like a blank canvas ~ full of possibility!  And it's also a time to simplify and let go.

A black and white palette is classic when combined with luxe finishes like mirrored furniture and polished silver.  Black is such an alluring neutral.  With coloured accents like plum or robin's egg blue (or yellow like this home), some velvet or faux fur for texture and a chandelier or two your heart will surely belong to your home.

Vintage Lingerie & Cashmere

The brisk air of autumn is gently sneaking through the warm summer evenings calling for a little cashmere.  Whether it's a shawl, a cardigan or this season's knit thigh-highs the luxurious feel of cashmere is a perfect pairing with delicate fabrics and always with lingerie.

The Loeffler Randall bootie with the buttery soft, t-strap ruffle are on my wish list for this season.  And of course the cashmere tights!  Anyone know where I can find some?

Ladies and Gentleman......NINE ~ Fellini

Getting lost in a Fellini film makes for a beautiful past time. Federico Fellini is one of the world's greatest directors! His combination of bewitching music, dream-like fantasy and extravagant cinematography leave an imprint on your memory forever.
I am beyond delighted that the magic of Fellini has continued in the film production of "NINE."
The original screenplay was written by Fellini and you could say its an "8 1/2" Part Deux.
Directed by Rob Marshall, this film has a stellar cast ~ Daniel Day-Lewis, Dame Judi Dench, Sophia Loren, Nicole Kidman, Marion Cottilard, Penelope Cruz, Kate Hudson...the list goes on and on......and I CANNOT WAIT....

je'taime francoise

Francoise Hardy is a singer/musician, actress and astrologer from Paris who became an icon in the 60s for her fashion and music. Almost everything from France in the 60s and 70s inspires me but her music truly soothes my soul. Even her videos are wonderfully unique.

The photos of Francoise from her Vogue record days are timeless and she was a beautiful yé-yé girl. Part of an amazing musical movement that was originated by women.

These photos of her and Bob Dylan are my favourites. They met in Paris in '66 which may have come about from Dylan's poem 'Some other kinds of songs' on the cover of his LP "Another Side of Bob Dylan." Here is a snippet of that poem:

Some other kinds of songs
for françoise hardy
at the seine's edge
a giant shadow
of notre dame
seeks t' grab my foot
sorbonne students
whirl by on thin bicycles
swirlin' lifelike colors of leather spin
the breeze yawns food
far from the bellies
of erhard meetin' johnson
piles of lovers
fishing
kissing
lay themselves on their books. boats.
old men
clothed in curly mustaches
float on the benches
blankets of tourists
in bright red nylon shirts
with straw hats of ambassadors ...

The Vanity Project

Inspired by the delightful project over at The Paris Apartment where readers are sending in photos of their vanities including perfume collections, mirrors and antiques; I wanted to post this gorgeous picture of Olivia Wilde's closet. The 19th-century vanity is exqusite!

On the Water with Alberta Ferretti

Last summer I spent several weeks in Turkey and gazed at the incredible boats that would leisurely float on the Mediterranean.

I would imagine that they looked like this inside.

I only had this In Style magazine with me the entire trip and fell in love with this spread.
Alberta purchased an old icebreaker and refurbished it to make it her own ~ adding an electric sunroof over the dining table, a Turkish bath and seashell sconces. It is a dream! She drops anchor in Cannes every year for the film festival and throws lavish theme parties all over the world ~ I'll accept an invite anytime!

love birthdays

Today is my birthday and I have to say I just love birthdays! I love the nostalgia and taking the time for reflection but it's also a moment to set new goals ~ aim for the stars!
It's key to stop, take note of where you are and how far you've come.

My birthday present to myself. Sweet perfume, Miss Dior Cherie and maybe a cupcake or two. And perhaps this Dior Haute Couture gown as well ... while I lounge and eat my cupcakes.

A Weekend of Rock & Rain

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! The days were misty here and I spent the stormy nights at some awe inspiring live shows.

Je t'aime!
Last night was Lykke Li at Sound Academy and she rocked it out! She already had my heart but after that performance she is my new obsession. Her stage presence is magnetic and I couldn't take my eyes off of her. Her hip-hop influence shines through (especially considering she did a wicked cover of Lil' Wayne's "A Milli") and the electro-pop magic of her high energy hits had the entire crowd dancing. Lykke was born to be on stage and brings completely different elements to her songs live than what you hear on her album. If you can catch one of her shows, I highly recommend it!

New Lykke Li ~ Enjoy!

Dance, Dance, Dance ::: Fantastic!

Sweet St. Vincent
Brooklyn's own St. Vincent at The Horseshoe Tavern was a show not to be missed. Annie Clark's impressive guitar playing and vocals enveloped the space and her band's woodwinds and drums made for perfectly woven sounds that are beautifully melodic. Her newest album 'Actor' was inspired by her favourite movies and has an in depth, cinematic feel that leaves you feeling like you took a journey along the yellow brick road.

Suspended Freedom

These are from Sam Taylor-Wood's Self Portrait series "Suspended." The photos themselves have a strong emotive quality on their own but when I read the story behind them it struck my heart chord. Sam has battled both breast and colon cancer and created the Suspended series to represent her fight against these diseases. The freedom, strength and vulnerability in the photos remind me of some incredible women I know who've battled cancer.
True Inspiration!

lavender love

A Parisian Boudoir ~ I can only imagine the view!

I have always been drawn to lavender accents in decor. It feels so fresh and sweet in the summer months but is cozy and comforting in the winter. I also love the wallpaper and mirror above ~ simply stunning!

Chosen Family

Lauren Dukoff is a photographer who has spent the last few years following around Devendra Banhart and other musicians/artists (who are also friends of hers) photographing them during performance and play.

These photos have been compiled into a book titled "Family." I've always been drawn to the idea of our chosen family and surrounding ourselves with those who we can draw inspiration from. In Sanskrit they call it a 'kula,' your chosen family, close-knit circle and/or community.

I am a huge fan of all of these musicians and their genius creativity. I need to live in Laurel Canyon and spend some sunny days sketching, hiking and listening to 'Cripple Crow'. This book captures the artistic kula of these inspired musicians including the likes of Banhart, Joanna Newsom, Vetiver, Bat for Lashes, Feathers, Vashti Bunyan and many more.
